One Month and 490 Meals Later
One month and almost 500 meals later, I am reminded that the human spirit is strong.
When the pandemic first hit and they started shutting schools, it wasn’t Isla I was concerned for. It was the countless children that relied on school for their next meal; my heart ached. Thus, from the inception of this company I vowed to donate 10 meals for every candle sold. And although I have no idea where this company will ultimately go, in the meantime, I can't help but be proud that together we were able to donate 490 meals in just ONE month.
Four hundred and ninety meals. I'm blown away.
You can do the math on how many candles that means I have sold and whether you think that’s a large sum or a small sum, it’s 490 more meals fed than yesterday. For that I am beyond both humbled and proud.
If you get caught up in the news, it will highlight a narrative that is negative and cruel. One that is corrupt and unjust. And while I KNOW that there are legitimate problems, things that are deep rooted and NEED to be fixed; when I find myself dwelling on the shit show played on repeat on the news, I forget the beauty right in front of me. The countless friends and family that support me. That show up for me. That believe in me. And those that I only know through social media who do the same.
Daily I work on this business, but as I take a 50,000-foot look at the company and what it has done in just one month, I am reminded that we, as humans, WANT to help. We WANT to support others. And love actually is all around.
“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around.” -The Prime Minister, Love Actually
Thank you for taking this journey with me. YOU mean the world to me.
